Compare HVAC Quotes With the Full Scope in View
Already have an HVAC estimate? Get a free quote comparison from Miller’s. Understand the equipment, installation work and support behind the price before choosing your next system.
For homeowners in the Tri-Valley, Contra Costa and nearby communities.
A comparison helps identify differences and questions. It is not a promise to beat another price or a substitute for assessing your home.
The same home. Different scopes. Different totals.
A lower bid may be a good option when it includes the work your home needs. A higher bid may include different equipment, duct changes, electrical work or support. The useful comparison is what each written proposal actually includes.
We’ll help you look beyond the headline price and identify what is included, excluded or still unclear. You can ask about an air conditioner, furnace, heat pump or complete heating and cooling replacement.
1. Compare the equipment
Look at exact model numbers, capacity, efficiency ratings and matched indoor and outdoor components—not just the brand.
2. Compare the installation
Check the assessment, ductwork, electrical work, refrigerant lines, removal and applicable permits and testing.
3. Compare the follow-through
Review written parts and labor coverage, commissioning records, homeowner handoff and the process if something needs attention.
Your HVAC quote-comparison checklist
Keep both proposals beside this checklist. If a detail is missing, mark it “not yet confirmed” and ask for it in writing. A blank line does not mean the work is included—or that it is unnecessary.
| Compare | What to confirm in both quotes |
|---|---|
| Equipment | Exact model numbers, capacity and efficiency; compatible indoor/outdoor components and any applicable matched-system documentation. |
| Sizing assessment | How the proposed size was selected using your home’s needs. Square footage alone does not establish the right capacity. |
| Ductwork and airflow | What is inspected, reused, modified or replaced; any airflow issues included in the scope. |
| Electrical and lines | Panel/circuit requirements, disconnects, refrigerant-line reuse or replacement, and related exclusions. |
| Permits and testing | Who handles applicable permits, inspections and required testing, which fees are included, and what documentation you receive. |
| Installation details | Equipment removal/disposal, access needs, equipment location, thermostat and accessories. |
| Startup and handoff | Commissioning checks, operating instructions, equipment registration responsibilities and maintenance guidance. |
| Warranty and support | Parts and labor terms separately: duration, exclusions, registration/maintenance conditions and who to contact. |
| Installed total | The full installed amount and taxes/fees as applicable. Keep equipment-only subtotals separate from installed proposals. |
| Changes and incentives | Written exclusions/change-order terms; rebates or credits listed separately with eligibility and availability verified. |
| Payment terms | Payment schedule and any separately disclosed financing terms. A monthly payment alone is not a total-price comparison. |
A fair comparison does not assume that a low quote cuts corners or that a premium quote guarantees a better result. Ask each installer to explain the differences in writing.

Questions homeowners ask when comparing HVAC bids
Why can two HVAC quotes be so different?
They can include different equipment, labor, access work, duct/electrical changes, testing and warranty terms. Start with the written scope and ask each installer to explain exclusions before comparing totals.
Is matching the equipment brand enough?
No. Confirm exact models, efficiency, capacity, indoor/outdoor compatibility and installation scope. Two systems from the same brand can provide different features and have different requirements.
Can my existing ducts be reused?
Sometimes. Their condition, sizing and airflow need to suit the proposed system. A home assessment helps establish whether reuse, modifications or replacement belong in your proposal.
Does a heat pump always cost less to run than a furnace?
No universal savings claim fits every home. Equipment performance, your electricity and gas rates, usage, solar setup and duct condition all affect operating cost. Ask for assumptions that match your situation.
Is a quote comparison a price-match guarantee?
No. Miller’s offers a free comparison to help you understand scope and options. It does not promise a lower bid or establish another contractor’s workmanship.
Should rebates or financing decide which quote I choose?
Compare the full installed scope first. Verify incentive eligibility, deadlines and availability separately, and review the lender’s actual terms before relying on financing. Ask what you would pay if an anticipated incentive does not apply.
